Crowders Mountain State Park is a 5,096 acre park about 20 miles from the City of Shelby to the southeast. Crowders Mountain peaks at 1625 feet above sea level, and Kings Pinnacle reaches 1705 feet. Crowders Mountain possesses several sheer rock face cliffs, ranging in height from 100 feet to 150 feet. The park was first opened in 1974 and was the outcome of a citizen initiative protesting the possibility of mining at the site. The park continues to grow in size with additions of land throughout the 1970’s, 1980’s and 2000.
A variety of passive recreation opportunities are available at Crowders Mountain State Park including hiking, rock climbing, picnicking and camping. There are both primitive campsites and 6 group backpack campsites. Fishing and canoeing are available on the 9 acre man-made lake.
